Matt Hope’s art project, originally introduced as “Hong Kong Wall” for the 10th annual HKWalls Festival in 2025, has evolved into a dynamic, week-long initiative titled “The Hong Kong Wall Open Project” (#HKWOP). Running from March 23 to March 29, 2025, at the PMQ Courtyard, this expanded installation will be open daily from 12 PM to 8 PM, coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 and Hong Kong Art Week. What began as a sound system installation featuring eight foam panels adorned with spray paint and electronics has transformed into an interactive platform fostering an exchange of ideas among diverse participants, including youth and families. Partnering with the Fabricatorz Foundation and Oneness Foundation, Hope’s project now emphasizes collaboration and community engagement.

The original “Hong Kong Wall” debuted with a live event where notable graffiti writers, invited by Hope, tagged the sound panels while DJs generated live music through them. “The Hong Kong Wall Open Project” builds on this by opening the experience to the public under specific guidelines. Hope retains artistic control, personally wielding the spray paint can for all tagging on his panels. Each day starts anew, offering fresh opportunities for participants to contribute, embodying the spirit of “oneness.” Sound performances remain integral, with all work connecting to Hope’s installation via microphone, and the artist deciding who accesses the sound system.

From March 23 to March 29, the PMQ Courtyard will buzz with creativity as visitors witness and join this evolving artwork. The project’s hashtag, #HKWOP, amplifies its presence across social platforms, inviting a broader dialogue. By blending visual art, sound, and community participation, Matt Hope’s “Hong Kong Wall Open Project” redefines his initial vision, making it a vibrant, inclusive highlight of Hong Kong’s 2025 art season.
